Here is a clear breakdown of official California Personal Watercraft (PWC) rules, safety warnings, and rental policies for riding a jet ski:
⚠️ WARNING: Operating a Personal Watercraft is an inherently dangerous activity. High speeds, sudden turns, and water spray can impair depth perception and control. Failure to observe basic safety rules increases the risk of severe impact injuries, drowning, or collisions.
No Night Riding: California law strictly prohibits PWC operation from sunset to sunrise.
Zero Tolerance (BUI Law): Operating a jet ski under the influence of drugs or alcohol is illegal. Under California Harbors and Navigation Code, a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08% or higher results in an immediate arrest and misdemeanor penalties.
Reckless Operation: Spraying swimmer/swimmer zones, "wake jumping" within 100 feet of another vessel, or weaving through congested boat traffic is classified as reckless driving and subject to fines.
Solo Operation: You must be at least 18 years old to legally operate a jet ski on California waterways.
Supervised Operation (Ages 12–15): Riders aged 12 to 15 may operate a jet ski only if direct, on-board supervision is provided by an adult (21+).
California Boater Card: Operators must carry a valid California Boater Card on board if required by state phase-in laws. (Rental operations typically provide an approved state safety brief/temporary exemption on-site).
U.S. Coast Guard–Approved Life Jackets: Everyone aboard a jet ski (operator and passengers) must wear a tightly fitted, USCG-Approved Type I, II, or III life jacket at all times while on the water. Inflatable life vests are strictly prohibited on PWCs.
Engine Cut-Off Switch (Kill Switch): The engine lanyard must be clipped securely to the operator’s life jacket, wrist, or clothing at all times. If the operator falls off, the engine immediately shuts down to prevent runaway watercraft accidents.
5 MPH / "Slow - No Wake" Zones: Operators must strictly maintain a maximum speed of 5 MPH within 100 feet of swimmers, docks, floats, mooring areas, or anchored boats.
Right-of-Way: Always yield the right-of-way to non-motorized vessels (kayaks, paddleboards, sailboats) and larger commercial boats.
To rent a jet ski in California, expect the following rental shop policies:
Driver Identification: Primary renters must present a valid government-issued photo ID (Driver's License or Passport) and be 18+ years old to sign rental agreements/liabilities.
Security Deposit: A major credit card hold (typically ranging from $500 to $1,500) is held for safety and potential damage coverage.
Mandatory Briefing: All drivers must complete a 10–15 minute safety and local waterway orientation before launching.
